You can mentally picture Okinawa when you hear the charming sound of the sanshin.
Actually, there is a lot of depth to the sanshin.
The sanshin is very simple in structure, having only a few parts. So its sound quality depends on the quality of its material. The part of the sanshin that influences the quality of sound is mostly from the neck (or sao) of the sanshin. At Arakaki Sanshin shop, the wood used for the neck is made primarily from unbarked lumber, including Yaeyama unbarked lumber. In Okinawa, sanshin necks made from this wood has earned recognition for its high quality. Unfortunately, today, Yaeyama unbarked lumber trees are diminishing in number. Other than that, there are unbarked lumbers from Southeast Asia, especially Indonesia. These are very dark and hard in structure, and makes a sharp and distinctive sound when used. Usually, you can tell that a sanshin is made with Yaeyama unbarked lumber by the black, shiny, wooden pattern or the heaviness when you hold the sanshin in your hand. Also, note that even sanshins that are made from the same type of wood do not guarantee the same sound.
Naoya Arakaki is the craftsman who makes the sanshins at the Arakaki Sanshin store. With a gentle look reminiscent of a child, he explained to us the qualities of the necks on the sanshins that are lined up in the store. He has a deep affection for sanshins, and it shows.
Our sanshins are created while paying close attention to the characteristics of the neck. The leather covering process of the sanshin sound box, for example, needs to be done in accordance to the neck's features, otherwise the sound quality will be affected. Sanshins can basically be assembled by inserting the neck into a wooden frame sound box covered by snake skin, but that alone does not give it quality sound. Beautiful sound is based on the adjustments to the features.
While being simple, there are many people who are interested in the sanshin; not just because of the sound, but also the depth of the appearance and feel of the instrument.
You can also purchase Sanshin easily.
Although we explained the general qualities of the sanshin, there are actually many varieties available; from reasonably-priced to top quality ones. You can choose the type of wood and lumber quality, and from either serpentine or artificial leather, depending on your preference. (* Customers from overseas are only allowed to use artificial leather since the airport forbids travel with serpentine leather). Also, don't worry if you are new to the sanshin, it's easy to start with the basics!
Anytime you are enjoying the sound of the sanshin, it will bring back sweet memories of your trip to Okinawa.
